Brandon Marshall says players use Viagra to get edge on field

The Chicago Bears wide receiver, when asked about the rash of Adderall-related suspensions in the league this season, said he'd heard of all kinds of methods players have used to get an edge, including the use of a famous little blue pill.

"I don't know too much about Adderall," Marshall told news reporters. "I know guys, it is such a competitive league, guys try anything just to get that edge. I'm fortunate enough to be blessed with size and some smarts to give me my edge. But some guys, they'll do whatever they can to get an edge. I've heard of some crazy stories. I've heard (of) guys using like Viagra, seriously. Because the blood is supposedly thin, some crazy stuff. So, you know, it's kind of scary with some of these chemicals that are in some of these things, so you have to be careful."
Ignoring the sudden double entendre of his "blessed with size" description and the logistical difficulties that could result from receivers trying to run a fly pattern while under the influence, is it possible that he's actually serious?
It appears so.
The New York Times reported in 2008 on a study funded by the World Anti-Doping Agency, where Marywood University tested the drug on several members of the school's lacrosse team to determine possible athletic benefits. WADA never added the drug to its banned substance list because there was insufficient evidence that the drug would enhance athletic performance, despite the premise that its ability to increase blood flow to certain parts of the body also would apply to muscles used on a football field.
Then again, maybe some of the experimenting players Marshall mentions were just confused by the message of this classic Levitra ad.

Saints players say charter bus was egged in Atlanta

Upscale travel is one of the many luxuries that NFL players enjoy. But the New Orleans Saints received a rude welcome to Atlanta ahead of Thursday night's game with the Falcons when their ride was egged Wednesday by airport workers.

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel was the first Saints player to tweet about it: "Wow, as we're boarding buses on the Tarmac @ Atlanta airport, we start getting eggs thrown @ us by airport workers! Guess they do hate us!"
Tight end Jimmy Graham chimed in shortly after.
"Bus just got egged after landing in ATL by the ramp workers," Graham wrote on Twitter. Classy! 'RISE Up' smh."
The Saints surely must have been riled up until they remembered that someone else would clean up the mess. Back to life at the top.

MLB union legend Marvin Miller dies at 95

Marvin Miller, 95, who formed the Major League Baseball Players Association in 1966 and helped transform sports economics, died Tuesday morning, the union announced.
Miller, who turned the union into one of the most powerful in the country, negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement in sports history in 1968. Six years later, he successfully challenged the "reserve clause'' when Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally played out the option years of their contract. Players were granted free agency after six years of major league service, which was formalized in the next collective bargaining agreement.

The minimum salary was $6,000 when Miller formed the union, and today, the minimum salary is worth $480,000. Miller also bargained for salary arbitration, which has been responsible for salaries to soar for players before entering free agency. The average salary was $3.4 million in 2012. He also helped players negotiate the right to arbitration to resolve grievances.
Said Commissioner Bud Selig in a statement: "Marvin Miller was a highly accomplished executive and a very influential figure in baseball history. He made a distinct impact on this sport, which is reflected in the state of the game today, and surely the Major League players of the last half-century have greatly benefited from his contributions. On behalf of Major League Baseball and the 30 Clubs, I extend my deepest condolences to Marvin's family, friends and colleagues."
Miller was called by Hall of Fame broadcaster Red Barber as one of the two or three most important men in baseball history, along with Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson. Yet, he was never inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame.
Miller also led union through three strikes and two lockouts, which perhaps damaged his Hall of Fame chances. He fell short in the executive balloting in 2003, 2007 and 2011, with Hall of Famers Joe Morgan and Tom Seaver endorsing Miller.

Former major league pitcher Jim Bouton was openly critical of the election, saying: "Essentially, the decision for putting a union leader in the Hall of Fame was handed over to a bunch of executives and former executives. Marvin Miller kicked their butts and took power away from the baseball establishment. Do you really think those people are going to vote him in? It's a joke.
"I blame the players. It's their Hall of Fame; it's their balls and bats that make the hall what it is. …Do they think they became millionaires because of the owners' generosity?"
When Miller wasn't elected last time, he announced that he no longer wanted to be considered for the honor.
"I find myself unwilling to contemplate one more rigged Veterans Committee, whose members are handpicked to reach a particular outcome while offering a pretense of a democratic vote,'' he said. "It is an insult to baseball fans, historians, sportswriters, and especially to those baseball players who sacrificed and brought the game into the 21st century. At the age of 91, I can do without farce."
Miller's successors, Michael Weiner and Don Fehr, also issued statements critical of the vote.
"Marvin's legacy is undiminished by this vote,'' said Weiner, who replaced Fehr as the union's executive director. "The Hall, by contrast, squandered a chance to better itself as an institution."

Hope Solo: 'I've never been hit in my life'

Hope Solo diffused the drama surrounding her personal life as the gold medal-winning U.S. women's soccer team prepared for an exhibition match against Ireland.
"My life is great," the goalkeeper said. "My life is happy."
Solo made her first appearance with the national team since she was married to former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens in Washington state on Nov. 13, a day after his arrest at a party for domestic violence. A judge determined there wasn't enough evidence to hold Stevens, but the matter remained under investigation.
Solo spoke after a workout with her fellow U.S. teammates at Portland's downtown Jeld-Wen Field. The national team plays Ireland on Wednesday night on its U.S. appreciation tour following a 2-1 victory over Japan in the final match at the London Games.

"It's unfortunate what the media can do to judge before the facts are out there. It's hard to see, but it's a hard truth, and it's part of life," she said. "I'm happy. I'm happily married. I would never stand for domestic violence. I've never been hit in my life."
Solo has had a stellar career with the national team, helping the team to two straight Olympic gold medals. But she's never shied from attention: From her Twitter criticism of former national team member Brandi Chastain during the London Games to appearing on TV's "Dancing with the Stars."
Police say that they were called to a disturbance at a home in Kirkland, a Seattle suburb, in the early morning hours on Nov. 12. Solo and her brother blamed a disturbance on three unknown men. Officers maintained they had probable cause to arrest Stevens because they observed evidence of an altercation, including a cut on Solo's elbow, and his admission that the two had argued, according to court documents.
The next day, Solo and Steven were married. Solo, 31, posted a smiling photo of herself with Stevens, 33, to Twitter two days later.
Stevens was selected with the No. 28 pick of the 2002 draft by the Seahawks after a stellar career at Washington. But he also was involved in incidents away from football that included reckless driving charges for crashing into a nursing home.
His best season with the Seahawks as in 2005 when he started a career-high 12 games and had 45 receptions as the Seahawks won the NFC championship.
Solo also went to Washington. The two started dating following the London Games.
"Like I said, we're happy, and ultimately that's all that matters," she said.
Wednesday's match is the sixth of the U.S. team's Fan Tribute Tour.
Jill Ellis, women's development director for U.S. soccer, is coaching the U.S. team against Ireland. Former Australian national team coach Tom Sermanni takes over the national team in January, replacing Olympic coach Pia Sundhage, who stepped down.
Ireland and the United States will play again Glendale, Ariz., on Dec. 1 as the tour continues.

Jim Boeheim sounds off on conference realignment

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - On the day after the Big East lost its fifth member in 18 months with Rutgers bolting for the Big Ten and with more defections likely on the horizon, the man who helped make Big East basketball the force that it is offered his view of the college landscape.
"I'm going to let those people play their games," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said Wednesday night after his sixth-ranked Orange beat Princeton 73-53. "I think they'll be doing that for the next 20 years. If they could figure it out and get it done in the next year, we wouldn't have to think about it.

"Maybe they should just have a draft, each conference should just draft teams ... except then they'd have to make a decision and they wouldn't be able to figure it out. Eventually, they'll get this thing figured out. They'll get all the teams moved and then in a year or two someone will say 'We need to take somebody,' ... But I'll be long gone by then."
Syracuse and Pittsburgh will leave the Big East after this season to join the Atlantic Coast Conference and West Virginia already has bolted for the Big 12. Either Louisville or Connecticut is expected to join the defectors going forward.
Although Syracuse has indicated it will continue to try to keep archrival Georgetown on the schedule, the changing college landscape will have an effect on rivalries. None was more intense than Georgetown-Syracuse in the 1980s.
"Rivalries don't matter to anyone anymore," Boeheim said. "If you ask someone at West Virginia if they like going to Texas Tech or Texas A&M and all those places, ask their fans whether they really like that. Maybe they do. I don't know. I don't get it. It's just the way it's going. There's nothing you can do about it.
"Like I said, if these guys (the conference commissioners) were running the United States in colonial times, Brazil and Argentina would be states because they have something we need. It's a great country."
Boeheim, in his 37th year at his alma mater, turned 68 last week and is eight wins shy of becoming the third Division I men's coach to reach 900, behind only Mike Krzyzewski and Bob Knight.

Jon Jones: Chael Sonnen 'doesn't deserve to fight me'

He hasn't registered a 205-pound win in the octagon since 2006, and he was soundly defeated by UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in his most recent appearance. So why did UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones agree to coach opposite Sonnen on The Ultimate Fighter 17 and ultimately face him in the octagon?
"Bones" said it was an easy choice. This is his chance to silence the trash-talking master by beating him down in a cage.
"Chael definitely doesn't deserve to fight me, and everybody sees that," Jones told USA TODAY Sports. "As long as people see that at the end of the day, I'm happy with that. But at the same time, a lot of people have said, 'Why not be the guy to shut him up once and for all? Why not be the guy to make his words very irrelevant once and for all – put a stamp on what Anderson did to him.' That's what I'm going to try to do."
Sonnen, of course, has in recent years established himself as one of the sport's biggest superstars by not only beating the likes of Michael Bisping, Nate Marquardt, Yushin Okami and Brian Stann but also serving up some of the most memorable trashtalk in MMA history. For the past few years, Silva had been Sonnen's primary target, but after falling short in a July rematch with "The Spider," the self-described "gangster from West Linn, Oregon" turned his attention to Jones.
Sonnen often refers to the champ as "Little J.J." and frequently offers wisecracks related to Jones' May arrest on a misdemeanor DWI charge. Of course, Sonnen was willing to back up the talk when he accepted a proposed UFC 151 with Jones that the champ ultimately turned down, resulting in the cancellation of the event.

In typical Sonnen fashion, he responded by offering up "The Jon Jones" at his Oregon restaurant Mean Street Pizza. "Loaded with chicken and full of cheese," the menu read. "Comes with a six-pack of beer."
Jones has endured previous run-ins with the likes of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rashad Evans, and he admits their verbal barbs often affected him personally. This time around, however, he insists Sonnen's quips are more entertaining than hurtful.
"Earlier in my career, I would have taken things a lot more to heart, I think," Jones said. "But I've faced so much adversity in such a short amount of time, it's just really making the game so easy. I'm facing all the drama, all the controversy, I'm facing it at such an early stage, there's going to be nothing left for me sooner or later."
Still, if Sonnen's barbs didn't bother Jones, then why take the fight? After all, Jones has defeated former UFC champions in each of his past five appearances, so facing a middleweight coming off of a loss hardly seems necessary.
Jones said it was the challenge of taking on the sport's most-revered trash talker and doing so in the pressure cooker that is "The Ultimate Fighter."
"I'm doing what most people wouldn't dare to do: face this guy's main gift while being around him all day, every day for six weeks," Jones said. "Most people can't stand to have Chael be interviewed about them. Most people want Chael on their side. Chael can be intimidating when it comes to insults and selling a fight. But I'm doing what most people would think I'm crazy to do. I'm going to be around you all day, every day. Let's hear what you got.

"I'm a winner. I believe I'm a winner. When you're a winner, why should you be afraid of anybody's gift? He's got the gift of gab. So what? I believe me just simply being myself will prevail. I'll out-do any tactics or insult that Chael has for me, and at the end of the day, I think I'll win because I'm confident in being a good person."
Jones, Sonnen and a cast of prospective UFC fighters are currently in Las Vegas filming "TUF 17," which debuts in January on FX. The two coaches then face off on April 27 at a UFC pay-per-view event that is expected to take place in New Jersey.
Sonnen's wit is unquestionably going to play a major role in not only the reality competition series but also the build-up to their championship fight, and the tension is expected to build. Additionally, both Jones and Sonnen have proven polarizing figures in their UFC careers and seem to strike major chords with fans who either love or hate both the dominant champion and the brash challenger. So while the fight between the two doesn't necessarily make a ton of sense in a traditional rankings manner, most fans seem to a have vested interest in watching one of the two men get his ass kicked.
Jones said it's that fan emotion that ultimately swayed him toward taking the fight.
"First and foremost, it was about giving people what they wanted to see," Jones said. "Chael Sonnen is somebody that I respect because of his past performances, but he doesn't intimidate me at all. I have no doubt in my mind that I'll beat Chael. But this is a chance to give the fans what they want, to show who I am as a person for 'TUF' and to let Chael show who he is as a person and to just entertain the fans – to be that guy.
"I'm confident. I have no worries. People will get to see who I am, and that's awesome. In the cage, that speaks for itself. Outside of the cage, I'm excited to let who I am speak for itself, too."

Garafolo: Jets meltdown is entirely believable

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – "Hi, Woody," the questioner began.
"Yes," Woody Johnson, the New York Jets' owner said, turning around to see who was giving him a Thanksgiving greeting in the tunnel outside of his team's locker room following the New England Patriots' smashing his squad 49-19 Thursday night.
Johnson realized it was a reporter asking for his reaction. So he gave it.
Sort of.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!" he said and walked behind a screen, away from a gathering crowd of media.
That pretty much sums it up. All of it.

t's the sound of the Jets' owner and also the fan base, folks who gave up a holiday at home to come to this "embarrassing" performance (the Jets' players words, and ours) at MetLife Stadium against a hated division rival that rattled off 35 straight points in the second quarter, including three touchdowns in 52 seconds, to turn a scoreless tie into a laugher.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
It's the sound of the linebackers and defensive backs not making the proper checks at the line of scrimmage and instead putting hobbled linebacker Bart Scott in coverage against running back Shane Vereen for one of the easiest 83-yard touchdowns of all time.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
It's the sound of quarterback Mark Sanchez running face-first into guard Brandon Moore's posterior after fullback Lex Hilliard was nowhere to be found to take the handoff. Instead, the ball popped loose as a sliding Sanchez unintentionally provided a fitting image for the Jets' 4-7 start to this season.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
It's the sound of Johnson's prized seat-seller Tim Tebow breathing through the pain of two fractured ribs suffered in Week 10 and apparently aggravated this past Sunday against the St. Louis Rams, forcing head coach Rex Ryan to remove Tebow from the game plan on this nationally-televised debacle.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
The sound of general Mike Tannenbaum's theory the Jets are a good team that's been only a few plays here and there from winning a few plays blowing up for the nation to see.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
The sound of tight end Dustin Keller tweeting about the fans who cheered when Sanchez was down and seemed injured for a few moments. They were surely the same fans saying "Te-bow" in unison.
"U R ridiculous + aren't real fans," Keller wrote.
The sound of noted super-fan Fireman Ed leaving the stadium at halftime, setting up an awkward moment in the second half when the post-touchdown siren that usually signals the start of his "J-E-T-S" chant went off with an imposter unsuccessfully trying to lead the cheer.
"Grrrrr-mmmph-aarrggh!"
The sound of Ryan on the sideline after any one of the Patriots' seven touchdowns – SEVEN, even without Rob Gronkowski, who is out with a broken arm.

Nets' Reggie Evans first player fined for flopping

The Brooklyn Nets forward was fined $5,000 for flopping in Tuesday's 95-90 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, becoming the first player to receive such a penalty, the NBA announced Wednesday. Evans was penalized for veering off and throwing his hands up after receiving a bump from Lakers forward Metta World Peace in the third quarter.

Both World Peace and Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni objected to officials after a foul was called.

Boxing great Camacho shot, is expected to survive

Hector "Macho" Camacho, one of boxing's most memorable fighters, both for his skills in the ring and his flamboyance out of the ring, was shot and reported to be in serious condition late Tuesday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, near San Juan.
The Associated Press reported that doctors and his spokesman said Camacho, 50, was expected to survive.
Dr. Ernesto Torres, the hospital director at the trauma center Centro Medico, told reporters that the bullet apparently struck Camacho in the jaw but exited his head and lodged in his right shoulder and fractured two vertebrae. The doctor said the boxer was at risk of paralysis from the shooting.
"Camacho's condition is extremely delicate," he told Telenoticias. "His physical condition will help him but we will see."

The newspaper El Nuevo Herald reported that Camacho, a three-time world champion who retired with a record of 79-6-3 with 38 KOs, and an unidentified man who was reported to be in the driver's seat, were shot in their car by assailants. AP reported that the driver had died, citing a police statement.
Camacho had bullet wounds in the neck and face.
According to the newspaper Primera Hora, police captain Reinaldo Santiago of Bayamón said Camacho and the driver were sitting in a Ford Mustang, when a gray bus pulled up and one of its occupants got out of the vehicle and shot the men multiple times.
The newspaper quoted homicide agent Jesus Alicea as saying police have one suspect in custody. A motive for the shooting is not yet known.
Camacho last fought in May 2010, losing a unanimous decision to Saul Duran.
During a career that spanned 28 years, he defeated such great fighters as Sugar Ray Leonard (5th-round TKO in 1997, Leonard's final comeback attempt). Roberto Duran, Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and he also beat Freddie Roach in 1985. Roach is now a Hall of Fame trainer.
Camacho lost to the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad and Julio Cesar Chavez, the latter in a fight with Chavez during which Camacho suffered a brutal beating, but fought until the end.
His representative, Steve Tannenbaum, told the AP that Camacho was considering a comeback at the age of 50.

There are countless stories surrounding Camacho's boxing career. Hall of Fame promoter Don Chargin said he was promoting Camacho's fight against Roach in Sacramento in 1985. Camacho was paid $50,000 for the victory. But he asked Chargin to hold onto the money until he needed it. It was more than a year later, Chargin said, that Camacho finally called and asked for his money.
Camacho has also had myriad problems involving drugs and alcohol since he first retired from boxing.
In 2007, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi in 2005. Police also found the drug ecstacy when they arrested him. All but one year of the sentence was eventually suspended and Camacho was given probation. He eventually violated that probation and spent two weeks in jail.
He has had two domestic abuse complaints filed against him by his wife and she filed for divorce several years ago.

Grinnell College's Jack Taylor scores NCAA record 138 points

Jack Taylor thought his cold shooting from the weekend was spilling into the week.
Turns out, Taylor was about to heat up.

The Grinnell College sophomore guard scored an NCAA-record 138 points during the Pioneers' 179-104 win Tuesday night against Faith Baptist Bible College in an Iowa-school Division III matchup.
"I don't think reality has really set in yet," Taylor said after the game. "I think it definitely will in the next few days. I can't really get my mind around it right now."
Taylor, a 5-10, 170-pound guard from Black River Falls, Wisconsin, shot 52-of-108 from the field, 27-of-71 from 3-point range, and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line to finish with the historic, head-shaking line of 138 points.

The 138 points passed Clarence "Bevo" Francis who held both the NCAA and collegiate scoring mark when he dropped 113 points for Rio Grande College of Ohio vs. Hillside in 1954.
"It's kind of a life-changing moment," Grinnell coach David Arseneault said.
By the end of the night, Taylor was the center of attention, not just in Iowa, but throughout country.
"Jack Taylor you deserve a shot of Jack Daniels after that performance lol...wow" Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant tweeted.
While the 138 points drew national attention, the 108 shot attempts equally stood out.
The New York Knicks' Carmelo Anthony was stunned when he heard the news after his team's victory over the New Orleans Hornets.
"I never heard of nothing like that. That's like a video game," Anthony said, an incredulous look on his face. "How can you shoot 100 times, though?"
"His elbow has got to be sore," Knicks teammate Raymond Felton joked.
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers was impressed. "That's crazy," he said. "I don't care what level you're at, you score 138 points, it's pretty insane."
Faith Baptist, located in Ankeny, Iowa, is a member of the Midwest Christian College Conference. The schedule on the school website listed the Grinnell game as an "exhibition." But according to Grinnell sports information director Ted Schultz, the game "absolutely" is official and the record will count. Schultz said because of conference rules on the number of games a team can play, Faith Baptist has to list some as exhibitions. Schultz said Grinnell has encountered this before but did check with its conference, the Midwest, on Tuesday morning to confirm the game counted. "It's an exhibition for them, but not for us," he said.
Taylor's performance overshadowed a 70-point night for David Larsen of Faith Baptist.
Not all were impressed by the feat, however. ESPN's Stuart Scott tweeted: "Not a big fan of Jack Taylor's 138-pts in Grinnell win. He took 108-shots including 71-3's...Just say that out loud. Now say "team"!"
Things didn't start off so hot for Taylor, who missed his first four shots and began worrying his struggles from a weekend tournament had carried over into Tuesday. During the weekend, Taylor combined to shoot just 11-of-41 from the field in a pair of games.
"The coaches and my teammates wanted to get me going tonight," Taylor said.
Once he got going, Taylor never really stopped, scoring 58 points in the first half.
Taylor, who said his previous high was 48 during a high school game, didn't realize how many points he had at the half until Arseneault walked in with the stat sheet.
"I thought I had around 30 points," Taylor said. "And (then) coach came in and said I had 58. That started to make me realize that it could be a special night."

Things really began to sink in during the second half when fans began chanting Taylor's name in the closing minutes.
"I figured I probably had a lot of points at that time," he said.
Arseneault, in his 24th season at Grinnell, has started a scoring revolution with a system of rapid movement, 3-pointer free-for-alls, and substitutions swiftly moving into the game like hockey line shifts.
Grinnell is located off Interstate 80 between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.
In 2011, Grinnell's Griffin Lentsch set an NCAA Division III single-game scoring record with 89 points in a game against Principia. Lentsch came off the bench to score seven points Tuesday.
The center of attention entering the game was getting Taylor, who finished with three rebounds in 36 minutes, back on track. He eventually did.
"He could have thrown it up with one hand and it would have gone in by the end of the game," Arseneault said.

Pair of local stars set to shine

SALISBURY — Tonight many of the best high school soccer players in Maryland will share the same pitch as they show off their talents in the All-State game to be held at Walter Johnson high school in Bethesda.
Two local seniors will get to share the stage with the state’s other stars as James M. Bennett forward Gavin Yingling, who was named to the All-State first team, and Washington striker Kyle Simpkins, who was named to the honorable mention squad, will take part in the exhibition match.

“It’s actually kind of funny because I’ve already been to watch one of those games before,” Yingling said.
“My brother (Kyle) made second team All-State (in 2008) so it’s kind of funny that I one upped him. But it’s a big honor because I know not many guys down here get it, there have been a few in the past but not too many.”

In fact just three players from the Bayside Conference have been named to the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer since 2008, two boys — JMB’s Kyle Yingling in 2008 and Parkside’s Larry Cornish who earned honorable mention in 2009 — and one girl, Stephen Decatur’s Julia Finecey, who earned second team honors in 2008.

Shabazz Muhammad debuts in No. 13 UCLA's loss to Georgetown

The most hyped freshman in the nation had completed the most anticipated debut of the 2012-13 college basketball season, but he wasn't happy.
Shabazz Muhammad walked into the postgame news conference and sat between his coach and a teammate, keeping his gaze down on the table in front of him.
No smiles, even though he'd finally been able to play a college basketball game after months of being in eligibility limbo. No smiles, even though he'd scored 15 points. No smiles, because you don't smile after your team loses to an unranked opponent.

Yes, even with the consensus top recruit of his class on the court, No. 13 UCLA fell to Georgetown in the semifinal of the Legends Classic Monday night. The Bruins will face Georgia, who lost to No. 1 Indiana earlier Monday, in Tuesday's consolation game.

For Muhammad, this whole tournament will be bittersweet. Obviously, he's glad to be reinstated, but losing to a team like Georgetown and missing an opportunity to face the nation's top-ranked team hurt.
"It doesn't feel good inside," Muhammad said. "I really wanted to get a shot at them but knowing we really aren't ready yet. We're going to practice and get this together. We're going to be a really good team."
Muhammad knows what he needs most is time with his teammates. He said he was trying to learn how to gel with them on the court Monday night, his first real game experience after being ruled ineligible due to violations of NCAA amateurism rules just before UCLA's season opener. Muhammad was reinstated Friday night, a week after the season officially began.

As part of Muhammad's reinstatement, the NCAA required Muhammad to sit out three games (retroactively applied to UCLA's first three games of the season) and pay back approximately $1,600 of what it deemed impermissible benefits related to unofficial visits he took to Duke and North Carolina during his recruitment.
But the week's worth of games isn't all Muhammad has missed. He couldn't practice with the team most of the summer because of a high ankle sprain. He wasn't allowed to go to China with the team in August because of eligibility concerns. And he strained his shoulder in late October.

"I thought he did a good job, and I actually didn't plan to play him as many minutes as I did," UCLA coach Ben Holland said of Muhammad's 25 minutes. "He missed two-plus weeks because of his shoulder injury, and he couldn't really get a lot of conditioning in. I thought he did a very good job, considering.
"He's still got a lot of work to do to put in and catch up conditioning-wise, but he did a good job."
Muhammad agreed with his coach's assessment, and so did Georgetown coach John Thompson III.
"They're still meshing," Thompson said. "As much as Shabazz has been practicing with them, he hasn't been out there playing."

More games and practices will help Muhammad learn Howland's system and learn about his teammates. For Howland's sake, that better happen quickly. The Bruins coach needs a successful season, particularly after last year – a season of turmoil, frustration and even bad publicity, too, after a scathing Sports Illustrated piece questioning his ability to control players in his own program.

McKayla Maroney still making 'the face' for her fans

9:50PM EST November 14. 2012 - WASHINGTON -- She may forever be known as the teen who sparked the Internet meme, "McKayla is not impressed." But for Olympic gold medalist McKayla Maroney, this doesn't seem so bad.
"No Olympic champion has a face made about them, so it's kind of cool, right?" she said Wednesday at an autograph session for fans. She was in town for the Kellogg's Tour of Gymnastics Champions, which stops at the Verizon Center on Thursday night.
The 16-year-old took home an Olympic gold medal in the team competition and silver in vault, but it was an image of her with a less-than-enthused face on the medal stand in London that stuck with the audience the most.

"I don't think you can tell somebody, even before, 'OK, I'm ready for this!'" Maroney said of the social media sensation that followed after she made the facial expression with all of the world watching.
"The whole world pretty much got obsessed with it," she continued. "Every single day I get asked by people to do 'the face,' so I'm bringing it along with me now for the rest of my life."
For Maroney, it's just one part of her life that has changed since her return home from Olympic glory, and her ensuing experiences have taken some getting used to.
"I run into people all the time and they literally just say, 'Thank you,' and I'm like, 'What do you mean?' It meant so much to them, and that really makes me so happy," she said.
One of the best things that has happened to her since the London Games was attending the Video Music Awards in New York in September. But her Olympic fame also resulted in a chance to try her other passion: acting.
"I did a Hart of Dixie episode, and I was so excited for that," she said. "It was kind of like going to the Olympics, because doing an acting job was something I'd always dreamed about doing."
But gymnastics fans can rest easy that Maroney, who lives in Long Beach, Calif., is not looking to step away from the sport anytime soon. She's been focusing on acting a bit as she continues to recover from a broken toe and a fractured fibula, but she's determined to get back in action. She had the first of two surgeries in September.
"Rio 2016 is definitely on my mind, and I would really like to go to some more World Championships before that," said Maroney, who won gold in the team competition and vault at the 2011 worlds. The next Summer Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
"Next year's nationals are what I'm shooting for, but with injuries and this crazy year I don't know."
Whenever she ends up returning to competition, Maroney knows that her fans will be waiting. Despite gaining almost 400,000 Twitter followers since the Olympics, she said she doesn't really pay attention to things like that.
"I just know that all my fans who are with me and going along for the ride, that's what means the most to me."
